Use of Battery Energy Storage Systems to Enhance the Frequency Stability of an Islanded Microgrid Based on Hybrid Photovoltaic-Diesel Generation

Primary frequency control in power systems is becoming more difficult as levels of non-synchronous generation grow. This paper explores how implementing a strategy based on the concept virtual inertia, supported by use battery energy storage (BESS), might positively impact stability grid. Particularly, this work centers its effort islanded microgrids hybrid generation: photovoltaic and diesel. presents methodology for representing an islanded-power system equipped with (PV), diesel generators, BESS, latter feature devised to improve resilience terms after contingency occurs. The proposed designed analysis tool help survey decision making planning operation these characteristics. implementation are used test electrical facing continuous imbalance caused PV-power intermittence assess varies when inertia BESS enabled or not. Matlab-Simulink simulation environment. numerical results achieved model show benefits characteristics both reducing fluctuations time-derivative under normal operating conditions.
